The Story Behind Nest County

The idea for Nest County took flight long before it became a book. It was originally a comic strip I created in 1985, a world brimming with feathered personalities and lively adventures. From the very beginning, I knew the story had to feel like an animated film—a world so vivid that readers could see and feel it as I did when I first imagined it.

The earliest concept revolved around a paradise for birds, an idyllic haven suddenly threatened by an invasion of snakes stealing their eggs for food. At one point, I explored a comedic twist—where the birds outsmart the snakes by replacing their eggs with supermarket eggs, only to get accidentally bagged at the store and end up in a human refrigerator. While fun and whimsical, I soon realized that bringing humans into the story introduced an unpredictable level of complexity. More importantly, it took the focus away from the birds. That’s when I made a critical decision:

🚫 No humans allowed.

This single choice reshaped everything. The story wrote itself, naturally evolving into a self-contained world where birds and snakes ruled the skies and land. As the narrative deepened, I discovered that Nest County wasn’t just a setting—it was an entire universe that needed its own rules, logic, and physics.

A New World, A New Way of Life

As the Nest County world expanded, my engineering instincts took over. To ensure the story’s events made sense, I needed to map out Nest County, synchronizing geography, time, and movement. This led to an entire cartographic framework, ensuring that distances, flight paths, and pivotal events unfolded without defying the internal logic of this universe.

• Distance was measured in flaps and curls, not miles.

• Currency wasn’t dollars—it was seeds.

• Government & society followed the rules of the Featheral Government.

By the time I reached the final pages, I realized that Nest County was no longer just a story—it had become a living, breathing world.
